Road Safety in Kenya & Traffic Amendment Bill

Usalama Watch Initiative; a non-profit, NGO registered under section 10 of the Kenya NGO coordination Act. The main objective of the organization is to promote road safety and save lives on Kenyan roads.

Each school term we receive reports of children involved road traffic crashes that result in injuries and fatality. Upon our intervention in schools road crashes and incidences involving children cease. Our school safety program is based on the commitment that no child should ever have to negotiate dangerous traffic on his or her way to or from school.

Too many of our children are being killed or maimed as they travel to and from school because our roads are too dangerous. It is in this respect that Usalama Watch Initiative is proposing a road safety partnership with your organization. Usalama Watch Initiative in collaboration with the task force members consisting of five organizations inclusive of Usalama are spearheading the amendment of the Traffic Act, Cap 403 to include safety measures for school children. SPEECH BY HON JACKSON MWANGI NGARE MEMBER OF COUNTY ASSEMBLY-GITHURAI

Created: 02 April 2014

SPEECH BY HON JACKSON MWANGI NGARE MEMBER OF COUNTY ASSEMBLY-GITHURAI CHIEF GUEST; ROAD SAFETY PROCESSION TO REMEMBER VICTIMS OF ROAD CRASHES.

We greatly acknowledge your remarkable work that Usalama Watch Initiative is doing.
They are leading an advocacy program on Pedestrian safety on Thika Highway and this event of remembering those that left right on this ground where we stand in the two matatu crashes last year.
Among the notable areas that Usalama Watch Initiative is vouching for are:-
Better signage throughout the Thika super highway;
Construction of additional foot bridges in places that have a high human traffic;
Maintenance/safety around existing foot bridges;
Speed calming measures in built-up areas;
Erection of barriers to protect pedestrians form crossing dangerously and Increased police enforcement cum patrols.

I stand here to support Usalama Watch Initiative’s work and ask the rest of the Githurai residents to support me.

Alongside helping to provide for pedestrian safety facilities at the Githurai round about through the construction of a modern ramble strip and signage, I will introduce a pedestrian safety bill in the county assembly of Nairobi to legislate laws on pedestrian safety that will help bring sanity on our Nairobi roads especially the Thika Super Highway.

I wish to thank Usalama Watch Initiative for their good work and wish to call on government to prioritize pedestrian safety.

As we observe and pray for the victims of road crashes, please take time and reflect on what you can do in your own personal space to make road safety a reality.

I thank you and God bless you.
